MULTIPLYING… IN ENGLISH!

As you know, we read in English during 30 minutes every Thursday. We have a portable library with all kinds of books: comics, cook books, art books, picture books, short abridged novels and a lot of science books.

Browsing DK’s “Children’s Encyclopedia”, a Tintin found a very curious table with multiplications. It was very intriguing and we decided to use it in class to do different activities.

Laura helped us to understand the text accompanying the chart and we discovered curious facts about multiplication in English. First, English people read expressions like 3X2 as “three times two” (tres vegades dos) which is much easier to understand.

And second, we discovered SQUARE (quadrats) numbers. Do you know what a square number is? It is the result of a number multiplied by himself.

We coloured on the board the different multiplications of square numbers and it always ended in a coloured square! Amazing!
