LET’S TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD 4

New Zealand is a country in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, it consists of 2 large islands:

  • North Island (with the capital – Wellington)
  • South Island.

The islands have much unusual wildlife not found anywhere else in the world, including flightless birds such as the endangered kiwi. The islands were first inhabited by the Maori people, who came from Polynesia around 1000 AD.

Some interesting facts about New Zealand are:

KIWIS

Kiwis are birds native to New Zealand. They can’t fly. Kiwis have become a symbol and nickname for New Zealanders all over the world. They are about the size of a chicken.

NEW ZEALAND POI

Poi is the Maori word for ball on a string. Maori women manipulate pois in a special dance.

MAORI TATTOO

Important Maori men always had distinctive facial tattoos. Their designs are very intricate and difficult to draw.

Women sometimes had tattoos around their mouths and chins, too.

THE HAKA

New Zealand rugby team, the All Blacks, is famous for the Haka – a traditional Maori war dance – that is performed to intimidate the other team before the start of a rugby match!

You can see them in this video.

Now, say if these sentences are TRUE or FALSE. Correct the false sentences:

  1. The capital city of New Zealand is Maori.
  2. Kiwis can fly.
  3. Women have tattoos on their faces.
  4. “All Blacks” is a rugby team.

LET’S TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD 3.

This week we travel to Unitated States of America. They are celebrating Halloween.

Halloween is on October 31st. Halloween is a big celebration for children in the USA and Canada. On Halloween, children dress up in costumes. They are monsters, famous people, ghosts, witches and pirates.

In the evening, children walk from house to house shouting “trick or treat” and people give them sweets. People decorate their houses with pictures of black cats, witches, bats or ghosts.

The most famous symbol of Halloween is the Jack O’ Lantern. Jack O’ Lantern is a pumpkin with a candle inside. Halloween is fantastic!

I have got a riddle for you! Can you guess it?

Hello boys and girls!

My name is Elisabeth, but my friends call me Beth.

I am going to travel with you. Remember to pick up your passport to travel.

Our first stop is the United Kingdom.

This country is composed of four territories: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. For this reason its flag is a mixture of four flags, as you can see in the picture.

It is called the Union Jack.

In the United Kingdom people don’t use euros. They buy with pounds. In these coins, there is the picture of the queen.

The capital city of the United Kingdom is London. In London you can visit a lot of things. There are museums, for example: The British Museum, The Science Museum, The Wax Museum… You can also visit The London Eye, The Buckingham Palace and the Big Ben.  This last building has got a huge clock on its top.

How much do you know about the United Kingdom?
