NEW LEARNING ENVIRONTMENTS AND HOW TO AVOID DROPOUTS IN SCHOOLS – THE WAY OF FINLAND
Europe and school life are changing fast. We should be wondering what kind of schools should we build for the future, how do we support learning and motivate our kids better with school buildings, learning spaces and new learning environments or what is the role of ICT in modern classrooms. These, are some of the questions this couse aims to answer.
Besides, dropout rate in Finland is really low in basic education. Schools work together with social and health care services to handle bad situations for pupils. Furthermore, they have also created many new methods how to prevent and handle bullying in schools.
NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
PISA- FINISH AND EUROPEAN EDUCATION SYSTEMS- AVOIDING DROPOUTS
On the one hand, the first course was based on thinking about modern and future school environment. We should create the most motivating learning environment for our children. They showed us their buildings, furniture, architecture, modern electric gadgets,…. These aspects help the students to be more confortable and motivated in their daily life at school. They invest a lot of money in the child’s learning environment. In this course I learnt the importance of the environment when the students are learning. The environment should be interesting for them and motivate something on themselves. Moreover, we should promote their autonomy.
On the other hand, We analyzed the fantastic results they obtain every year in the PISA exams. We compared the results of different countries and then They offered us basic information about Finnish school system. We also researched OECD Pisa results with some specialists. They explained us that the teachers create the curriculum of their schools and at this way they can personalyze the main aims with the reality of each school. They believe in manipulative and digital activities in which the student is the centre of the knowledge. The student is the main character in the process of learning; in this sense the teacher gives them the tools they will need to acquire the objectives. They learn in a competential way, for instance at school they have the corner of carpentry or haberdashery. They try to present real life situations to the students and this is the key for the success. This course gave me the opportunity to think about the importance of giving my students the tools to apply in their real life. We should create competential students.
