COUNTING NESTS AND TREES

Today we asked Carlos if he could give us the two bird houses they have in “Comunitat de Petits”. We have explores what was it in the inside. It was surprising. Two nests made with hay and with some feathers!

We have speculated if that nest was big enough to lay eggs. Later some Alicies pointed out the fact that eggs could be much smaller than the ones we buy in a sumermarket if birds are smaller than hens.

After a conversation we decided that we are going to build some bird houses like the ones in “Comunitat de Petits”.

Since we have the Mayoress’ consent, we are going to hang them on the trees in front of the school. Therefore, we decided we should cound how many trees and how many nest there are in front of the school.

In general Alicies were really excited with this process.

HOW CAN WE HELP BIRDS?

Today we had a conversation around birds. Linking birds with the current project in Alicies we decided, that we could adapt the project to birds in an new question: How can we help birds?

Some Alicies pointed out that trees where necessary as well as a house or a nest. Finally, one Alicia said that water and food would be essencial.

After this conversation we decided to go at the “Comunitat de Petits” playgroud. There we found that there were trees and two houses for birds.

When we came back to the classroom we decided that we could help birds building a bird through.

We had a great conversation and the feeling of putting the projecrt on the track.

ENDANGERED ANIMALS

Today we had a conversation around endangered animals. Some Alicies pointed out that they felt angry and sad at the same time. However, they also said that it was a problem to be solved.

In the meantime, we started talking about an endangered animal in particular: the blue whale. They where amazed by its size. Since 30 meters is kind of a complex number to imagine, we have measured 30 meters in the corridor. Later, one Alicia said that we could check if all Alicies together would be able to cover that distance. It was almost 30 meters but a blue whale is still too long!

To finish, we have made a blue whale with a blue paper using origamy techniques.

DO ALL NESTS ARE SIMILAR?

Today we have been talking about how different nests are. Some are simply a bunch of twicks accurately assabled together, others are a hole or a cavity in any given material. There is something surprising, some birds only scarb a little soil or stones in order to make their nests. We got also surprised by the platforms and “islands” (mound nests) build by some birds.

Afterwards we draw and paited the one we prefered.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT BIRD BEAKS AND CLAWS

In Alicies, and following the previous session about birds we have worked around how these animals are specialists. First we talk about their beaks. After the conversation they did an experiment. With different obects such as tweezers, chopsticks and kitchen tongs. The objective was to realize that with some tools it is easier to pick some types of seeds whereas with others it was easier to pick smaller ones.

Later, we have talked about claw and types of feed. They have deduced that different claws are very good for certain uses. Afterwards they have chosen one type and build a model with palaydough.

WE TALK AND EXPERIMENT ABOUT HURRICANES

This week we have talked around a climathologic topic: Hurricanes. We have watched some videos about different Hurricanes, one in Puerto Rico and one in Florida.

We also talked about how they are originated and how do they act. Finally we made an experiment to simulate an hurricane. We could differenciate the center with the borders and their different speed.
