Diuen que tot va sorgir en el Dia dels Innocents de 2014, quan responsables de Nintendo, The Pokémon Company i Google Maps van decidir fer broma amb els seguidors de la franquícia dient-los que havien deixat anar criatures per tot el món. Google va arribar a publicar un vídeo animant als mestres pokémon a llançar-se al carrer per fer-se amb tots.
Niantic Lab, que va desenvolupar aquell i ha treballat amb Nintendo, ha decidit aprofitar alguns dels portals que ja existien i que estaven situats en esglésies i monuments destacats de les ciutats. Altres llocs en els quals solen estar els punts d’interès són els grafittis. De fet, encara que els hagin esborrat, pot ser que encara apareguin a la app.

They say that everything happened on April Fool’s Day 2014, when heads of Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Google Maps decided to joke with fans of the franchise saying that they had released creatures worldwide. Google published a video encouraging pokémon trainers to take the streets to catch them all.
Niantic Lab, who developed the game and has worked with Nintendo has decided to take some of the points that already existed and that were located in churches and monuments of the cities. Other places which are usually points of interest are graffiti. In fact, even if they were erased, they may still appear in the app.
