6th Grade American Sports History Project

6th grade learned about the History of Sports in the U.S.

Dear Flama Parents,

Many poeple of color ( women, black, african american, latino, asian etc.) represent the United States today in popular sports  such as American football, baseball, basketball, soccer , track and field and more. This was not always the case and when it was, it was not easy at all.

6th grade viewed pictures and videos, that clearly showed the reality of injustices committed towards women and people of color, struggling with the barrier in american sports throughout history including discriminative, inappropriate actions, remarks, abusive words etc. towards women and people of color in sports history up until today.  6th grade gained a new perspective, their own opinions, feelings, knowledge and respect for the athletes, people they learned about or already had admired by truly connecting the past with the present.

They also read, interpreted and discussed famous quotes from many of their favorite modern American Athletes ( Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Micheal Jordan, Lebron James ) as well as new ones we learned and talked about in class that were important in the history of American sports, such as Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, and Mia Hamm.

Class activity: Make and collect own sports cards ( colored and laminated), with American players and their inspiring quotes. )img-20170215-wa0018img-20170215-wa0017img-20170215-wa0013img-20170215-wa0019img-20170215-wa0011
