Invasive species workshop

Last Thursday 18th, our 3rd and 4th grade students joined an environmental education and awareness (how invasive species affect biodiversity) workshop arranged by Assossiació Bioesfera. Our students learned about how global warming, landscape transformation and globalization have all stimulated the arrival and establishment of exotic species.

We saw how more than 100 new species have been introduced – either naturally, accidentally or intentionally- in Catalonia over the last few years. Recently, many invertebrate species have arrived and expanded their range, including the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), which was detected for the first time in Alt Empordà.

We really enjoyed the workshop given by Bioesfera. It is not disputed that Environmental awareness is an integral part of the movement’s success. By teaching our friends and family that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it.
