Swiss Chard: A Plant with a Problem!

We have noticed spots or strange marks on the leaves of our school garden’s Swiss chard plants. These might be signs of a plant disease! Just like us, plants can get sick.

Some common diseases that can affect Swiss chard include:

Fungal Diseases: These are caused by tiny organisms called fungi. They can cause spots, powdery mildew, or even rot on the leaves.

Bacterial Diseases: Bacteria are another type of tiny organism that can make plants sick. They can cause spots, wilting, or even death of the plant.

Here are the most likely environmental factors that may have made the Swiss chard plants sick: Excessive moisture and overcrowding

Fun fact: Did you know that Swiss chard is actually a type of beet? It’s closely related to sugar beets and red beets, but instead of storing energy in its roots, it stores it in its colourful leaves!

Let’s work together to nurse our Swiss chard back to health!
