A Life Animated directed by Roger Ross Williams, is a coming of age film about Owen Suskind and his family, and how they used Disney animated films to communicate. I personally enjoyed the film. It wove in Owen’s adult life, and how it’s moving forward, with the struggle that he and his family faced during his childhood. On top of that, it wove in the stories he had written about a boy who was the Protector of Sidekicks. It was an interesting take on a documentary. I found that it held my attention, I wanted to know how things ended. I found myself rooting for Owen, getting excited along with him through his achievements and hurting when he faced new challenges. The highs and lows of the film were accompanied by an animated story, the story of the Protector of Sidekicks. When Owen’s girlfriend broke up with him, the Protector became lost in the dark, scary woods. And when Owen came to terms with it and realized that everything was going to be okay, the Protector found his friends in a sunny field. I believe that imagery really helped make this film more than a simple, possibly slightly boring, documentary. I would definitely recommend this movie to others, it was phenomenal.
