Healthy behaviors (Latvia)

There are no men in the world who aren’t interested in their own health. But have you ever thought about how many phenomena there are which impacts your health? It’s you – your native heritage, habits, believes and lifestyle. It’s the environment where you live. They are the people you are surrounded by. Sometimes it’s not easy to find the answer how to act at this or other situation in order not to hurt your health.

The World organization of Health has developed the Health definition: Health is the complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the status without disease or disabilities.

There are many factors which affect our health but the main ones are the environment and our lifestyle. These are the factors we have to teach our children in family and school.

Realizing that because of the human activities in environment there come many different chemicals, some of them are poisonous and they affect our immune system, CNS, endocrine and reproductive systems. Environmental pollution changes the way of life, threaten ecosystems, causing the greenhouse effect, changes the climate. Cleaning the environment In schools, sorting waste, collecting PET bottles and wastepaper, in cooperation with the forestry, helping planting the trees, making houses for birds, cleaning the river banks, we teach our students from young ages to take care about our environment, keep it clean and healthy.

Lifestyle itself includes our habits, all daily activities. It has been found out that the essential habits that affect our health are: wrong nutrition, immobile lifestyle, ignorance of mouth hygiene, smoking, using alcohol, ignorance of traffic safety etc.

In order to keep good mental and physical health, every day we must respect with the principles of healthy nutrition, food pyramid, what food we buy – from large or organic farms. It is useful to introduce students how production is grown in organic farms, and together take part in the harvesting work. Also, at home and at school we should pay more attention to our physical activities, their multiplicity and regularity. We could more often organize thematic sports days at school.

It’s Important to understand and be aware how the harmful substances like alcohol, cigarettes, drugs affect on our health. Only working together, we will be able create this consciousness in ourselves and our fellow human beings that we want to live in safe, long, healthy, clean and tidy environment.

Fighting against early dropout (Turkey)

A common educational problem in schools is attendance and drop-outs that take place at the end. This situation is also defined as leaving school before completion. Dropping out of school is a process that begins with students’ growing distant from school norms, continues with students’ disaffiliating with school activities and values, and ends with students breaking away from the school environment. Dropping out of school serves as a potential problem both for the individual and society. Dropping out has a disadvantages for both the student and for the public. When looked at from the individual’s perspective, they will be forced to carry out a life without a diploma which will result in a life with low income. Also, dropping out will leave the individual deprived of the knowledge one obtains in school. Those who have dropped out of school are more likely to be unemployed and, if employed, are more likely to receive lower wages. Drop outs are more likely to participate in illegal activities, experience health illnesses, and not to be able to become financially independent. When thought about the harm dropping out causes society, the benefits of education come to mind. These benefits can shortly be said as the decrease in crime rate and health problems, social integration, ensuring fair distribution of income, stability, democracy and the increase in participation. In societies where the rates of dropping out are high, these benefits cannot be obtained as desired. This situation harms society in an economic, social and political way. When human capital and national development are considered, drop outs are found to be a problem that needs to be prevented.

When looking at the rates in secondary education, it is seen that drop outs are more common in education facilities that provide vocational training. In the education monitoring report prepared by the  Education Reform Initiative in 2010, it was found that 9.4% of drop outs were seen in high schools that provided vocational and technical education. If the problem of dropping out is deal with, then the investment in vocational training wouldn’t go to waste.

Vocatonal training plays an important role in preparing teens for business life, improving the skills of adults and for the economy to meet the needs of the labor market. Countries are aware that providing a better vocational education has a positive effect in economic competition.

With this said, we would like to carry out this project in order to create new methodologies and consider new applications to find solutions to the dropping out problem. Our primary goal is to review the reasons of the problem, the applications and lack of solutions with partner countries.

Foster Inclusion Versus Exclusion (Italy)

At the meeting all partners will present the characteristic for their countries, regions and schools to know better each other’s. During the visit we will see the resulting audiovisual works meeting in previous meetings.

From the educational point of view, to fight against social exclusion it is necessary the elaboration of good teaching practices to combat social discrimination by guaranteeing the access to education to people who suffer any kind of exclusion. Thus, allowing them to live with dignity and to participate actively in society.

Education is neither the only cause for social exclusion nor the unique solution to the problem, but, by giving support to schools that welcome a big amount of students from disadvantaged social or physical background, teaching in an innovative way, offering training to the teachers, facilitating the cooperation with other professionals and allocating appropriate resources, we can help to overcome the social exclusion.

How is it linked to other EU priorities? It is linked to the prevention of early dropout, a problem associated to exclusion, and to guaranteeing the necessary conditions for the students with special educational needs so that they can successfully integrate in the general system.

The Liceo Statale “G. Marconi” aims to strengthen the culture of inclusion to respond effectively to the needs of every student who shows special educational needs.

For this purpose we always:

  • try to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere
  • support learning through a curriculum review developing individual educational attention;
  • promote the active participation of all students in the learning process;
  • center the action on the class for every single students;
  • foster the acquisition of collaborative skills;
  • promote policy cultures and inclusive practices through closer collaboration among all components of the educating community;

The main objective is the reduction of barriers that limit learning and social participation through the use of facilitators and the analysis of the contextual factors, both personal and environmental, causing those barriers.

The subjects of the intervention in favour of the inclusion in school are all pupils with Special educational needs, including:

  • disability;
  • specific development disorders;
  • students with socio-economic disadvantages;
  • pupils with linguistic and/or cultural disadvantages;
  • A special educational need is a difficulty that is evident in developmental age and/or learning education.

When subjects show problematic behavior in terms of damage, obstacle or social stigma they require and are given an individualized education plan.

The Ministerial Directive of December 27, 2012 points out that “every student, continuously or for certain periods, may show the necessity to have Special Educational Needs for physical, biological, physiological reasons or even for psychological, social reasons. So that our schools must provide adequate and personalized help”.

For each subject we build an education course aimed to:

  • respond to individual needs
  • monitor the growth of the person and the success of actions
  • monitor the entire course
  • promote the success of a person respecting each personality and identity.

Inmigration(Spain)

At the meeting all partners will present the characteristics for their countries, regions and schools to know better each other’s. During the visit we will see the resulting audiovisual works meeting in previous meetings.

The significant presence of a great amount of immigrant students in the education centres has important consequences as the professionals have to balance the personal special needs of these students with providing an equitable and high-quality education.

The education centres must have a main role in the creation of a socially inclusive society.

The main problem lies in the combination of several factors: different languages and cultures, socioeconomic differences and the tendency for clustering all that in certain education centres.

That fact can increase the social differences, which are transmitted from one generation to the other, to cultural segregation, social exclusion of certain communities and interethnic conflicts.
