Chess and English

.

“Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”

From Sant Ròc School we think that playing to chess has got several benefits for the children and we want to give the opportunity to our students of being involved in these. Chess improves the skills needed to concentrate, take decisions and have a critical thinking, it helps understand the consequences of making decisions, improves de memory, the social abilities and the empathy, works on gratitude and highly improves the space control and the flexible thinking.

Beside all these benefits that we can give to our students, we think that overall, the fact that the entire project is worked in English, contributes to the learning of this language in lots of ways, as the students will feel more relaxed and motivated when participating in English activities in a future.

All the educative material has been created by two very important specialists in the chess world that have decided to transfer all their knowledges in the very best way for teaching this marvellous sport to students of first and second cycle. These professionals are George Angyan, English and History teacher, chess in English trainer and creator of the stories in the Chess and English book and Judit Polgar, the only gifted woman capable to be in the ten first places of the world’s classification of Chess. Both of them have created a beautiful project that relates knowledges and skills with emotions and values, and we believe that we cannot overlook this opportunity of introducing it into our centre.
