Volcan la pété !!!

This week I shared with the 6th grade the news from Reunion Island. Indeed, during the last week-end, our volcano, “le Piton de la Fournaise” woke up for the great pleasure of every local and tourist. Don’t worry every person is safe. Given that the volcano is effusive, and not explosive, the magma is really fluid. In other words, the lava is forming fast and very extensive flows, which provokes low power explosions.

However, a volcano still can be dangerous, so we are lucky that our volcano is far from cities. Even though the glowing lava fountains are a gift from mother nature, the latter remains extremely hot and destructive. In fact, the lava has a temperature of 1200°C and lava fountains can project waves up to 15 meters high, with a flow speed of 80 km/h.

It’s already the third eruption of the year and many people love walking during the night, just to see the marvelous red volcanic flows light up in the night. And today I’m glad to bring you a bit of this joy and to share the impressive pictures.
