International Day for European Authors (2)

On Thursday 21 March, so as to celebrate both the World Poetry Day and the International Day of European Authors, the literary route Sweet rumble of water in memory, written by teacher and writer Emigdi Subirats, was held at the Tortosa municipal park Teodor González. The second-year high school scenic students recited poetry and read prose, while student Josep Fibla was playing the transverse flute. The route was designed to pay tribute to English and American authors who had some kind of relationship with the city of Tortosa or some of the local writers. We are talking about Nobel Prize Winner Ernest Hemingway, who was the last war reporter to leave the city when the 15th April 1938 Tortosa bombings; Virgínia Woolf, one of whose books was translated by local translator Carme Camacho; The Brönte Sisters, whose novels were analysed by student Amanda Cutts in her 2023 research project; or Nobel Peace Winner Martin Luther King, whose Letter from the Birmingham gaol was translated into Catalan by local poet Zoraida Burgos. They also talked about famous local poet Gerard Vergés, who translated all Shakespeare’s sonets into Catalan and looked up to American poet TS Eliot.

Students enjoyed the activity whereas they learnt what a Literary route was like. During the previous lessons they had been told in class about the biography of these famous 20th century writers.
