The Institut Dertosa hosted on Tuesday 17th June the second session of the Finnish expert exchange programme, welcoming educational professionals from Finland to share their insights and experiences in language education for immigrants. This session focused on practical cases, available resources, and strategies for fostering linguistic integration.
The Finnish experts presented several compelling case studies of immigrant students who have successfully integrated into Finnish society through targeted language support programmes. These real-life stories illustrated how personalized support and access to appropriate learning tools can make a significant difference in the linguistic and professional development of newcomers.
A key point of the session was the presentation of accessible teaching materials made available by the Finnish Ministry of Education. These include structured language modules, visual aids, and interactive tools tailored to different professional fields. The aim is to ensure that immigrants have practical resources to support their Finnish language learning from the very beginning.
Another important topic discussed was the linguistic awareness of immigrants. The experts emphasized how crucial it is for learners to understand the importance of acquiring the local language for both social and professional integration. They also shared methods used in Finland to raise this awareness and encourage proactive learning.
In addition, the session highlighted the importance of field-specific vocabulary acquisition, especially in sectors such as culinary arts and nursing. The experts explained how teaching language through a professional lens — focusing on terms, expressions, and situations common in these fields — greatly enhances learners’ confidence and employability.
Overall, the second session offered valuable insights into Finland’s inclusive and practical approach to language education, leaving Institut Dertosa’s staff motivated to apply similar strategies in their own educational contexts.
