Children in Year 6 finished their mosaic candle holders in the style of Gaudí this week. They have been learning about the Catalan architect during this term and they visited Park Güell and La Sagrada Família. There, they could observe lots of wonderful stained glass windows and some amazing mosaics. Back to school we learned about cool (blue, green and purple) and warm (red, yellowe and orange) colours and how Gaudí used them in La Sagrada Família. Children chose warm or cool mosaic pieces to make a mosaic candle holder. They glued 16 mosaic tiles on each side. Then they distribute some jointing compound speedily and evenly over the mosaic tiles and in the joints. After a few minutes, they could remove the surplus compound with a slightly dampened sponge. Next day they removed whatever was left (a grey film) on the mosaic tiles, using a dampened sponge to do so. Finally childre wrapped the candle holders in pairs. It was hard work but it was worth it!!
