Just before Halloween, students were part of the first Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest in Institut Castell d’Estela. In this project, students had to bring a decorated pumpkin to school, carved in the style of a Jack-O’-Lantern from Irish folklore. Additionally, if they recorded the process at home and guided through the steps followed, they would have an additional supplement to their English subject mark.
For the two days before Halloween, the high school corridor was decorated with pumpkins imitating zombies, Corpse Bride, a Coronavirus cell, and many other terrifying and creative ideas. Taking advantage of this gloomy decoration, the students from 2nd of ESO created and read some frightening stories in English in the hallway.
On the 30th, the teachers voted for their favourite pumpkins (without knowing their creator’s name), and the top three contestants were awarded. In first position, the winner was Arlet B.(1st ESO), followed by Estel S. (1st ESO). In the third position, there was an exciting tie (with 7 votes each) between three contestants: Ruth J. (1st ESO), Leo P. (1st ESO), and Txell M.with Iria P. (2nd ESO).
As a prize, these students were awarded a ticket to the “Túnel del Terror” in Amer, organized for Halloween in our town, as well as a book adaptation in English of some of the classic horror stories, such as The Hound of the Baskervilles (by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) or Death on the Nile (by Agatha Christie).
After decorating the high school, these beautiful Halloween creations were exhibited in the “Túnel del Terror” in Amer, as part of their frightening decorations. You might have seen them!
This project has been an opportunity to delve into the history of Jack-O’-Lanterns, to put their arts and crafts into practice, and to give a spooky atmosphere to the high school! For sure it is going to be celebrated next year again, so maybe you want to start thinking about next year’s pumpkin design!
