KA229 Math and Art walk together (2019-2022)

Project Number: 2019-1-PL01-KA229-065577_4

Web del projecte: http://www.mathandart.eu/

Mobility for teachers and students. It is started by students in the 3rd year of ESO and finish it when they are in the 1st year of Baccalaureate.

Schools participating in this project:

  •  Zespol Szkol Elektronicznych i Licealnych (Vocational Technical High School of Electronics) (Varsòvia, Polònia)
  •  IMS Private School (Limassol, Xipre)
  •  I.T. Giordani-Striano (Nàpols, Itàlia)
  •  INS Carles Rahola i Llorens (Girona, Spain)

This project has the following objectives:

  •  Recognize mathematics as a language that surrounds us and that belongs to the arts as well.
  •  Develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving in students using digital tools and innovative teaching techniques (STEAM, outdoor classes, peer learning, educational games).
  • Create, collect, and implement STEAM activities to integrate them into the curriculum of the different subjects.
  • Promote the use of English (teaching material elaborated with CLIL methodology, communication in English).
  • Work in international groups to promote tolerance, diversity, and intercultural dialogue between students.

Methodology:

At first, the students have made a competition to elaborate the logo of the project. The best of each country have been chosen, and then the best of all countries.

During the project, the following actions were carried out:

– STEAM activities at school

– STEAM Day at school

– Teacher training in STEAM

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 and part of 2021, project activities have not been possible.

STEAM activities at school

  •  “Design a theme park attraction!”

The student acts as an engineer from a prestigious theme park and he has been asked to prepare a design for a new attraction. The student must analyse the energy sources, its transformations, and losses. In his/her project will have to answer the following contents: attraction name, aim of the attraction, short explanation about it, scheme of the attraction, energy sources, analysis of mechanical, kinetic, and potential (gravitational and elastic) at different points of the attraction (minimum 2), analysis of energy losses and possible improvements, attraction model.

PROJECT 4

  • “CSI: Rahola”

At the end of the course there is a synthesis task in which the students carry out different activities integrating the knowledge and skills learned. The task they must do is solve a crime. The students receive information about the suspects, draw and identify the different prehistoric weapons of the crime, participate in a mathematical orientation race in the woods, and make a kayak trip to locate a clue to the crime. Finally, they receive film training, and make a video with the mobile where they expose their resolution of the crime.

STEAM Day

  • STEAM Day 2021.

The school has participated in the “Science among all” Fair in Girona with 3 experiments. They make videos and post them on YouTube.

Teacher training

  • “Technological Conferences 1st edition – STEM teaching innovation”

It is a course that has shared reflections, good practices and teaching resources that have been put into practice in several institutes in the STEAM field.

In addition, the project contains several mobility of students and teachers funded entirely by the EU:

1.- February 2018 – Poland. 2 teachers and 8 students (5 girls and 3 boys) participated in a meeting with other students from all the countries of the project. There they have carried out activities of the project, have seen their school, and have made cultural and tourist visits.

2.-  June 2021 – Virtual meeting. Due to COVID-19 it is not possible to travel, and the meeting is held virtually. 2 teachers and 16 students from Spain participated in this meeting. Students made some project activities (a presentation and a game) related with this question “Where to observe fractals in nature?”

A survey was also passed to students from 3ESO to Baccalaureate to measure the student’s motivation according to science and arts learning and development.

  • STEAM Day 2022.

This year in our steam day we have proposed a project in collaboration with a very good initiative
of the University of Vic. An initiative of the BETA Technology Centre of the University of Vic –
Central University of Catalonia.
