Last Tuesday, October 14th, our students took part in an English learning activity and visited the historic Font Nova Washhouse. When houses didn’t yet have running water, people used public washhouses to do their laundry. Working women and maids would gather there with their baskets, singing, chatting, and sometimes gossiping while they washed clothes.
During the visit, we discovered not only how a washhouse functioned but also an example of beautiful Modernist architecture. Students learned about:
- The architectural and functional features of a traditional washhouse.
- Everyday life in the 19th century, during the industrialization period.
- The importance of public services in the city’s past.
- The value of preserving our historical and cultural heritage.
It was an enriching experience that helped us connect history, architecture, and language learning in a fun and meaningful way!
