DEEP INTO THE FOREST
14/06/19When we stand in a forest and look upwards, admiring the trees soaring above our heads, a common question often pops up. How long have these trees been here?
The thing about trees is that they are all different; some live fewer than a century, while others can live for more than thousands of years.
These age-old guardians have fascinated people around the world since time immemorial, but for students, there is a great deal of curiosity about accurately calculating the age and the height of trees. So how did we do it?
We went straight to the forest, chose a tree and we measured the height of the tree by only using a pencil and a tape measure. Subsequently, we calculated the age of the tree by using a mathematical operation.
In the diagrams and photographs below and on the following page, you can see how we worked this out.
*** Now you have the instructions and have seen how to do it, don’t you feel like doing the activity too!!!
