Some days ago – May 7th, the students of 4th of ESO went to a virtual speech about the European Union (EU). We connected with another 30 centres of Catalonia, and Francesco Camonita, the Italian organizer, explained to us the working, the activities and the history of the EU.
We learned that it is formed of 27 countries (recently, it had 28, but in 2020 the UK left it with Brexit) and the origin of it: that it was created at the end of World War II, because the USA gave an aid of 12.000 million dollars to repair and make the capitalist part of Central Europe stronger to have good allies just in case there was another war with the USSR. These aids came with the condition of having an agreement with the two enemies of Europe; France and Germany, that marked the beginning of the EU. It started with only 6 countries, by the Schuman Declaration where the first agreement of this institution: the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). From that moment, it had devolving new accords; a common market and currency, free circulation of the people and the distribution of the money using subsidy to invest in one policy. From the beginning, it had the aim to keep the peace inside the union, and it has been doing so since then.
Francesco also explained to us that the government of the European Union is divided into the European Commission, the EU Council and the European Parliament. The first one is formed by the politician leaders of the states -27 in total -, to decide the orientation of the new politics; the Council of the European Union is where the specific minister of one politic of each state gather and decide how to affront one specific problem. They also inspect the offer of law of the European Commission. Finally, the European Parliament is the organ formed by 751 members, and they approve the laws.
He showed us some offers that the EU gives, like the Erasmus +, Eures job and some other activities that the young people can take advantage of to learn and travel through Europe, and the new proposal that now is being carried out.
When the exposition ended, all of us did a Kahoot to prove what we have learned. It was very exciting because we competed with about 300 people, and we laughed a lot.
And to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the Schuman Declaration and therefore the birthday of the EU, the BIM are going to do a little on-line game (Europe escape) to the 4th of ESO students. You’ll be able to play it too soon.
