English journalists for a day!

The third term is an exciting time for students at Vallvera. Summer is just around the corner, the air smells of fun and freedom, at the English lessons we are studying future tenses and discussing our holidays plans, and Girona is full of tourists enjoying sights and interesting spots. At the same time, resit exams put pressure on each of us and final marks won’t lie. It’s a bittersweet moment in students’ lives

Among this hustling environment, there is a school activity that excites us- 3rd of ESO students are going to the midtown to interview tourists using English as a vehicular language in a real-life context! We are going to put on an English journalist’s shoes to look into foreigner’s points of view about our country and culture.

First of all, we have created our own interview script with interesting and interactive questions for them to know why they choose Girona, details about their trip and their opinion on different topics as diverse as the Catalan language, the independence or nowaday prices.

We made groups of four people and started off this amazing adventure!

This activity was made to self-assess ourselves when interacting with people from other countries in English, and to see how interesting a respectful conversation with a foreign person can be. What most of the groups noticed was that the area where most tourists were gathered was the Cathedral, a Roman catholic church that appeared in “Game of Thrones” TV series. We saw many people with a map on one hand  and a camera on the other- Cheese!

We interviewed people from Greece, Mexico, Texas, New York, the Philippines, London, Paris….and we took photos with them as a souvenir in order not to forget this inspiring experience! Will we repeat it next school year, teacher?
