In the English area, we focus on creating meaningful texts, that is texts that are based on real and motivating experiences for students. Working on festivals in English-speaking countries, such as Diwali, allows us to give cultural context to language learning and make it much closer and more experiential.
With fourth graders, we discover Diwali in the first term and, as a closing activity, the students paint Rangolis in the playground in small groups. These Rangolis become the perfect excuse to write in English. During the second term, each child describes their creation using a vocabulary of colours, shapes and sizes, as well as simple expressions that they already know. By doing this, writing ceases to be a mechanical exercise and becomes a tool to express what they have created and experienced.
Throughout this first term we’ve been very lucky to be able to share some very fun and enriching afternoons with Meredith. She’s been coming to our school for many years to do the reading animations of the books we’ve read in English.

Since speaking is the most natural language skill, in our English department we encourage the use of spoken language to prepare students for authentic situations: introducing themselves, asking for information, describing, explaining… This gives meaning to learning and increases motivation.

With the fifth grade students, taking advantage of the fact that we have worked on the “Cinquain Poems”, we made some hearts with the intention of giving them to the people we love as a token of love. They look really nice, don’t you think?
In the English classes we’ve worked on the importance of this celebration and we’ve made some crafts, which have been exhibited in the corridor so that everyone can see the different tasks carried out. Therefore, enriching each other from the different proposals.
