\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFer cagar el ti\u00f3\u201d is centuries-old tradition that has its origin in the days where most of the people in Catalonia lived in farms and small villages and had fireplaces in their houses. From\u00a0 8th<\/sup> December onwards, little children gave food (fruit peels, etc) to he \u201cti\u00f3\u201d (a wooden log) and covered him with a blanket to keep him warm. Then, on 25th<\/sup> December, little children made him \u201cshit\u201d. Traditionally, it had to be burning when this was done, but as nowadays most people haven\u2019t got fireplaces at their homes, that\u2019s not the case anymore. In order for him to shit, small children had to sing a song or pray, and at the same time hit him with a stick. Again, traditionally the t\u00ed\u00f3 didn\u2019t shit big presents, as those were reserved for the Three Wisemen, but sweets or simple small toys.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also possible that children have to \u201cfeed\u201d different \u201ctions\u201d that \u201clive\u201d at their relatives\u2019 (uncles, aunts, grandparents\u2026) homes, and when Christmas day arrives they make the round getting different presents. Also, in some small towns there is a \u201cti\u00f3 del poble\u201d, where all the children in town get together to make him \u201cshit\u201d. And in most of schools in Catalonia, they also prepare a ti\u00f3 that pre-primary children will have to feed during many days and then make him shit on the last day of school.<\/p>\n

The \u201cti\u00f3\u201d may seem a strange tradition to people outside of Catalonia, but it\u2019s an element that makes Christmas here (like the \u201ccaganer\u201d) unique among the different Christmas celebrations \u00a0in Spain.<\/p>\n
