We have been doing a large number of activities related to historical memory during this course 2021-2022. The last one was carried out by our students on 4th technological grade, as they recorded the famous tale “The old man and the bridge” by Ernest Hemingway, both in English and its Catalan translation. These recordings took place\u00a0 in Hemingway street, just in front of\u00a0 the huge new painting that’s portraiting the destruction of the bombings and next to the biggest Air Raid Shelter in town.<\/p>\n
The famous tale is about the bombing of the Amposta bridge in April 1938, and shows\u00a0 the suffering of thousands of people who had to leave their villages because of the bombings.<\/p>\n
Ernest Hemingway<\/strong>\u00a0was an American novelist who won the\u00a0Pulitzer Prize<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Nobel Prize for Literature<\/strong> in 1954. Throughout his life he had different contacts with the war, since 1918 he enlisted in the\u00a0Red Cross<\/strong>\u00a0and driving ambulances in Italy during\u00a0World War II,<\/strong>\u00a0working as a journalist, publishing and live isolated from urban society.<\/p>\n During the\u00a0Civil War<\/strong>\u00a0working as a war correspondent and reaches\u00a0Tortosa<\/a>\u00a0on April 4, 1938 to cover the defense of the area of the\u00a0Lower Ebro<\/a>\u00a0before the advance of Franco ‘s troops:\u00a0“At two this afternoon,\u00a0Tortosa<\/a>\u00a0was a city almost demolished, evacuated by civilians and no soldiers. Twenty<\/em>\u00a0–\u00a0four kilometers above was fought fiercely to protect\u00a0Tortosa<\/a>, the fascist objective in its advanced toward the sea.<\/em>\u00a0” And it becomes one of the last to leave the field chroniclers of the\u00a0Battle of the Ebro.<\/strong><\/p>\n His last chronicle was the April 18, 1938, near\u00a0Amposta<\/a>\u00a0and hidden behind a field next to the road onions\u00a0Tortosa<\/a>\u00a0and says:\u00a0“The Ebro Delta<\/strong>\u00a0has a good, rich soil, and where they grow onions, tomorrow there will be a battle. ”<\/p>\n
