En ocasions marr\u00f3 amb irisacions. Quan s&#8217;altera superficialment mostra els colors de la limonita i el color de la ratlla \u00e9s grisa, bruna, negra o verdosa. El color groc llaut\u00f3 met\u00e0l\u00b7lic de la pirita ha fet, en molts casos, que la gent el confongui amb l\u2019or. En realitat \u00e9s molt f\u00e0cil distingir la pirita de l&#8217;or: \u00e9s molt m\u00e9s lleugera per\u00f2 m\u00e9s dura que l&#8217;or, no es pot ratllar amb l&#8217;ungla o amb un ganivet de butxaca, i es pot trencar f\u00e0cilment amb un martell mentre que l&#8217;or s&#8217;aixafa o es doblega.<br \/>\nEs troba en una \u00e0mplia varietat de formacions geol\u00f2giques, des dels dip\u00f2sits sedimentaris a filons hidrotermals, i com a constituent de roques metamorfiques. Tamb\u00e9 es troba en la majoria de roques \u00edgnies en pegmatites. \u00c9s un mineral habitual en els filons met\u00e0l\u00b7lics per\u00f2 tamb\u00e9 en roques plut\u00f2niques (granit), metam\u00f2rfiques (pissarra, talc, esquist) o sediment\u00e0ries (margues i argiles).<br \/>\n<strong>Usos i\/o aplicacions<\/strong><br \/>\nLa pirita \u00e9s un dels minerals m\u00e9s usats per a l&#8217;obtenci\u00f3 de l&#8217;\u00e0cid sulf\u00faric (H2SO4) pel seu elevat percentatge en sofre.
