Aquesta caixa permet reproduir processos geol\u00f2gics a escala, com la formaci\u00f3 de serralades i fosses tect\u00f2niques o valls de rift, que s\u00f3n massa lents per ser observats directament a la natura. La caixa t\u00e9 una paret m\u00f2bil en un dels costats i els laterals s\u00f3n de metacrilat transparent. Per fer models an\u00e0legs de processos tect\u00f2nics, primer es posen dins la caixa diferents capes horitzontals de sorra i d\u2019altres materials, com farina, sucre o sal. Aquests materials simulen el comportament de les roques de l\u2019escor\u00e7a quan estan sotmeses a una deformaci\u00f3. Per reproduir un proc\u00e9s d\u2019extensi\u00f3 (formaci\u00f3 de valls) o de compressi\u00f3 (formaci\u00f3 de serralades), es despla\u00e7a la paret m\u00f2bil en un sentit o un altre, accionant una manivela. A mesura que la paret es mou, els diferents materials es van plegant i fracturant i el relleu va canviant. La caixa de sorra es va dissenyar i construir el curs passat, fruit d\u2019una col\u00b7laboraci\u00f3 interdepartamental en qu\u00e8 van intervenir els professors Javier Arag\u00f3n (Tecnologia) i \u00c0ngels Piqu\u00e9 (Ci\u00e8ncies Naturals).
