First chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

The journey was long, but it didn’t feel that way because it was so enjoyable. Lleida, Zaragoza, Olite, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Miranda de Ebro, Olatzi – Irati’s mother’s hometown-, Tudela, Burgos… and finally León. There, a bus was waiting to take us to Robledo de Fenar, a small village with 46 inhabitants surrounded by nature. Right now, as we write this chronicle, we can see a nest with a pair of storks getting ready for spring.

Our arrival at the camp can be summed up in one word: welcome. The camp leaders are very kind. We had time to settle into our cabins, break the ice, meet the students from the secondary school in Tudela with whom we will spend the week, learn the rules for living together, dance, have dinner, and even celebrate a birthday by blowing out the candles.

Second Chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

Everything has gone smoothly, as if we had already been at the camp for weeks. At nine o’clock sharp — feeling well rested and full of energy — we had breakfast. Afterwards, we did a short zumba session to get both our bodies and minds moving. Then we moved on to the morning activities, working on a project about healthy habits.

In the afternoon, we continued exploring the topic of health with another planned activity. Of course, there was also time for some sports before dinner. One of the biggest challenges of this trip has been the break from technology. As you know, students are only allowed to use their phones for fifteen minutes a day. So far, the experience has been very positive for everyone, both students and teachers. The food, as always, is tasty and well balanced: vegetable soup, Spanish omelette, and fruit or dairy products.

Later in the evening, they took part in more relaxed, fun activities. During this time, they not only practised their English but also spent time getting to know the students from Tudela, with whom we are sharing this language stay.

And as we finish writing today’s chronicle, we look up at our storks — now our neighbours — and we are beginning to recognize their familiar clatter… clap-clap… clap-clap…

Matí; zumba, esmorzar i projecte.

Third Chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

We will begin the story of our third day with the most exciting moment: the match between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid. Even though victory was close, it did not happen. Still, watching the game together, far from home, was a special and unifying experience. We even shared the room with devoted fans of Real Madrid CF — and everything remained perfectly friendly.

As the day went on, we started to notice the first signs of tiredness among the group. Some were physically exhausted; others had sore throats and weaker voices. However, nothing that could not be helped with an ibuprofen, carefully given by the doctor who is with us at the camp.

The morning followed our usual routine: zumba, breakfast, and project work. This time, they became reporters, as they had to record a short news report. At lunchtime, we enjoyed a rice dish — simple but delicious. In the afternoon, we had activities with Rosa and Elisenda (we worked on vocabulary related to hobbies), followed by some time for sport. In the evening, we had dinner, watched the big match, and then went to bed with slightly heavy hearts… but that is football…

Tomorrow, León is waiting for us.

Fourth Chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

Time flows more slowly than usual, more than it would if we were at school; perhaps because we have absorbed something of this natural and pleasant setting, so simple and unassuming…The most remarkable incident during an afternoon of outdoor games is when the ball escapes from the court, rolling down the slope – chased in vain by a couple of boys or girls – until it finally reaches the field below the campsite. There, a few patient cows graze peacefully, quite indifferent to all the excitement.

At this very moment, as we write this chronicle, we can hear the soft clinking of cowbells. A scattered chorus of small birds reaches us as well, with the occasional trill trying to bring a touch of harmony. There is also the sharp chac-chac-chac of a magpie — and, of course, our storks, who from time to time clatter their beaks and make themselves heard above everything else.

However, today we left this peaceful natural setting behind to visit the city of León. The students began a gymkhana in front of the Convento de San Marcos, a sixteenth-century building in the Gothic style. Afterwards, they visited the magnificent León Cathedral, also Gothic. Full of wonder, they began to recall everything they have recently learned in their Social Sciences classes about this artistic style. Spectacular stained-glass windows glowing with colour, ribbed vaults, keystones, slender naves, organs, altarpieces, light everywhere… suddenly, it all made perfect sense.

Before heading back to the campus, they had time to do some shopping in one of the streets besides the square of the Cathedarl.

Fith Chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

Today we’ve been visited by the rain, even by a hint of hail. Nothing serious. For a few moments, it was pleasant to listen to the sound of the water while we took part in a relaxation session inside one of the wooden cabins. It almost seemed as if Mother Nature wanted to remind us how fortunate we are.

In becoming aware of all this, it is also a good moment to reflect on the opportunity these days represent for all of us. We practise English, we socialise with boys and girls from another part of Spain, we adapt to the different situations that each day brings. We learn to set aside our usual routines and improvise a new comfort zone. We strengthen our sense of group, we experience both successes and mistakes calmly and open our eyes and our understanding to nature, we marvel at the beauty found in every corner, ask for help, seek advice, and give thanks.

The day’s main highlight was the performance of the projects that each group has been preparing throughout the week. Some families were able to watch from home and see for themselves that the work had truly come together; everyone gave what they could, and there was space for each person to contribute. Some took on the role of actors or actresses, others directed, some edited, and others worked on writing the script.

That is the beauty of a project: everyone can find a role where they can shine — or at least a place where they can make the effort to grow and improve.

In the evening, more rain, a hearty dinner, a bit of washing up, one last activity — and then off to sleep.

Sixth Chronicle from Robledo de Fenar

We spent the whole day already missing what is now coming to an end. The last meals, the final activities with the monitors, the last games and, in the evening, the long-awaited disco. One way or another, everyone felt like letting go a little and moving freely to the rhythm of the music.

The teachers watched it all — with a touch of envy, we must admit it, for the energy these youngsters seem to have in abundance — and became aware of the bonds that have grown between our students and those from Tudela. There is so much complicity between them.

Afterwards, the monitors handed out diplomas to the groups or students who had stood out in different ways: the tidiest room, the cleanest dining table, the most thoughtful participation, the willingness to help others, and the results of the project completed during the week. It was an emotional end to the day, both because of the kind words that were shared and, above all, because the moment had come to say goodbye.

Emotions surfaced, and some could not hold back their tears. It is a beautiful thing to witness, and it reminds us of the remarkable ability people have to find their place wherever they go. We show ourselves as we are, and along the road of life we find companions and allies. Thankfully, that is the way of things.

…
