Es un relato en primera persona en el que L\u00e1zaro cuenta la historia de su vida desde su infancia. Cuando su padre fallece, su madre lo pone al servicio de un amo ciego. Despu\u00e9s, L\u00e1zaro pasa por un total de nueve amos, entre ellos: un escudero, un fraile y un cl\u00e9rigo. Cada uno representa una cr\u00edtica hacia la sociedad y, especialmente, hacia el clero.
