Tampoc la seva obra, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i>Stoner<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">, a la qual dediquem aquestes l\u00ednies, ser\u00e0 un t\u00edtol que evoqui res significatiu en el lector que segueixi amb inter\u00e8s el panorama de les lletres nord-americanes de la segona meitat del segle XX. \u201cText desconegut d\u2019un autor ignorat\u201d, anotar\u00edem probablement a la nostra agenda si en una tert\u00falia sent\u00edssim parlar d\u2019aquesta obra, i tal vegada afegir\u00edem: \u201cper\u00f2 un\u00e0nimement elogiada\u201d. I amb aquesta perplexitat tancar\u00edem el quadern de notes, encuriosits per les raons de l\u2019oblit d\u2019un text publicat fa m\u00e9s de quaranta anys que ara suscita cr\u00edtiques tan favorables. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">Escrita en un estil senzill, per\u00f2 d\u2019aquella senzillesa elaborada que ens fa sospitar de l\u2019\u00fas d\u2019una regla estricta que economitza paraules de tant mesurar-les; redactada, d\u00e8iem, amb una simplicitat enlluernadora, allunyada dels excessos ret\u00f2rics d\u2019un estil pretensi\u00f3s que acostuma a pagar el preu d\u2019una eur\u00edtmia fallida, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i>Stoner<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">narra la hist\u00f2ria d\u2019un humil professor de literatura anglesa a la Universitat de Columbia, que veu com la vida passa per davant dels seus ulls sense allargar la m\u00e0 per agafar-la, fins que aquella el fa pujar al seu tren sense gaireb\u00e9 adonar-se\u2019n, amb la ceguesa amb qu\u00e8 l\u2019agafem sovint, empaitats pels altres o per una passi\u00f3 que ens instal\u00b7la en un vag\u00f3 que ja no tindrem forces per abandonar \u2014ni tan sols quan prenen consci\u00e8ncia de l\u2019error de la nostra decisi\u00f3. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"ca-ES\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">La seva prosa exhala una honestedat tan demolidora, una autenticitat tan clarivident, que J. Williams ens fa sentir aquesta vida sense grans esdeveniments que \u00e9s la d\u2019 Stoner com a pr\u00f2pia a trav\u00e9s d\u2019un proc\u00e9s d\u2019identificaci\u00f3 constru\u00eft, curiosament, a partir de silencis m\u00e9s que no pas de la paraula. I \u00e9s que l\u2019obra constitueix un exercici notable de contenci\u00f3 narrativa, de sobrietat en el tractament de cada situaci\u00f3, on el dramatisme no \u00e9s ocasi\u00f3 per un exc\u00e9s verbal, sin\u00f3 m\u00e9s aviat pel contrari, per l\u2019aplicaci\u00f3 d\u2019aquella regla de la senzillesa elaborada que fa imaginar al lector molt m\u00e9s del que ens diu el text. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">Si els personatges de Balzac sovint se\u2019ns presenten dominats per una \u00fanica passi\u00f3, la intensitat de la qual aglutina totes les forces del seu esperit, totes les seves energies, darrera d\u2019una aspiraci\u00f3 a la qual s\u2019aferrissen obsessivament i fora de la qual perden el sabor de la vida, b\u00e9 podr\u00edem dir que Stoner va trobar aquesta passi\u00f3 en la literatura. Va ser a partir del moment en qu\u00e8 va escoltar a classe el sonet setanta-tres de Shakespeare (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i>En mi pots contemplar l&#8217;estaci\u00f3 de l&#8217;any \/ quan ja ben poques fulles (o cap) pengen encara&#8230;<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">) que es va despertar la seva consci\u00e8ncia tot fent-lo descobrir a qu\u00e8 havia estat cridat. I all\u00f2 que va descobrir, amb la convicci\u00f3 ferma de qui ha rebut d&#8217;una fam\u00edlia de grangers el legat d&#8217;una honesta i humil laboriositat, va ser que exerciria la doc\u00e8ncia fins al final dels seus dies, sense que els conflictes amb d\u2019altres companys entel\u00e9s la seva dedicaci\u00f3 en cos i \u00e0nima a la seva veritable i \u00fanica passi\u00f3, la literatura. No \u00e9s aquesta mitj\u00e0 per altres ambicions, sin\u00f3 la vocaci\u00f3 que d\u00f3na sentit al seus dies, la manifestaci\u00f3 pura d&#8217;all\u00f2 que veritablement estima, el refugi on troba la calidesa que no va con\u00e8ixer en el seu matrimoni. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"ca-ES\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">A ning\u00fa fa mal Stoner amb la seva passi\u00f3 que, viscuda d&#8217;una forma virtuosa i exemplar, \u00edntegra i humil, acaba exigint la recompensa d\u2019uns moments de felicitat. \u00c9s per aix\u00f2 que quan aquesta se li presenta en forma de relaci\u00f3 amb una jove professora no suscita la condemna moral del lector, condu\u00eft magistralment per J. Williams al territori d\u2019aquella saviesa humana que brolla del fons del cor i que anomenem sovint sentit com\u00fa. Confessa Stoner aleshores, el quaranta-tres\u00e8 any de la seva vida, \u201cque la persona que s\u2019estima al principi no \u00e9s la persona que s\u2019estima al final, i que l\u2019amor no \u00e9s un fi, sin\u00f3 un proc\u00e9s en el decurs del qual una persona n\u2019intenta con\u00e8ixer una altra\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\">D\u00e8iem al principi que era probable que aquesta obra de John Williams no evoqu\u00e9s res significatiu en el lector interessat per la novel\u00b7la nord- americana contempor\u00e0nia. Per\u00f2 estem segurs que, un cop llegida, en formar\u00e0 part del cor creixent que actualment l\u2019elogia, i tal vegada anoti a la seva agenda: \u201cObra mestra, injustament oblidada, a la qual el temps, com a tot text veritablement gran, situar\u00e0 en el lloc que li correspon \u2014consol tard\u00e0 per aquell a qui se li retreu en vida el reconeixement merescut\u201d.
