Zweig emprengu\u00e9 l\u2019ambici\u00f3s projecte de repensar la personalitat de Maria Antonieta, d\u2019aprofundir el perfil psicol\u00f2gic de l\u2019esposa de Lluis XVI, tot emmarcant la seva figura en el context pol\u00edtic i social de la Fran\u00e7a de l\u2019Antic R\u00e8gim a la defensa del qual la reina rest\u00e0 fidel fins els seus \u00faltims dies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">El lector familiaritzat amb els estudis biogr\u00e0fics d\u2019aquest autor sap que S. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Zweig no es conforma amb les aparences, amb all\u00f2 insubstancial o accidental del car\u00e0cter del biografiat; que la seva <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">forma mentis<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">el porta a esbrinar l\u2019essencial, la clau que dona intel\u00b7ligibilitat a l\u2019\u00e0nima dels seus personatges, el ressort que actua des del rerefons de la seva conducta i esdev\u00e9 principi hermen\u00e8utic capa\u00e7 d\u2019il\u00b7luminar-la. Tamb\u00e9 n\u2019\u00e9s conscient que a l\u2019autor \u2014un cop assolit aquest objectiu\u2014 li agrada fer \u00fas del m\u00e8tode comparatiu, seguint l\u2019exemple de Plutarc a les seves <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Vides paral\u00b7leles<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">, per tal de contrastar les virtuts d\u2019un personatge amb els defectes d\u2019un altre, cercant efectes de llum i contrallum que posin de manifest qualitats <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">que d&#8217;una altra manera romandrien ocultes. En el cas de la biografia del reformador Calv\u00ed, Zweig trob\u00e0 el contrapunt en la figura del humanista Castellio; en el de Fouch\u00e9, el contrast es planteja amb Talleyrand; en el de Maria Antonieta, amb la seva mare, l\u2019emperadriu Maria Teresa d\u2019\u00c0ustria, exemple d\u2019intel\u00b7lig\u00e8ncia pol\u00edtica i de rectitud moral.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">En aquest sentit, s\u00f3n clarificadores les p\u00e0gines introduct\u00f2ries de l\u2019obra on Zweig contraposa el car\u00e0cter heroic al mitj\u00e0. Aquest \u00faltim \u2014amb el qual identifica Maria Antonieta\u2014 inclinat de forma natural a una pac\u00edfica forma de vida,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">no vol, no necessita grans fites; s\u2019estima m\u00e9s viure tranquil\u00b7lament i en la foscor. No vol responsabilitats d&#8217;Hist\u00f2ria Universal; en t\u00e9 por: \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">De fora i no de dins ve all\u00f2 que li obliga a sobrepassar la seva pr\u00f2pia mesura<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">\u00bb. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">El car\u00e0cter mitj\u00e0, raona l\u2019autor, necessita primerament ser llan\u00e7at fora de si mateix per arribar a ser tot el que \u00e9s capa\u00e7 de ser i no sospitava abans; per aconseguir-ho, el dest\u00ed no t\u00e9 un altre est\u00edmul que la desgr\u00e0cia, com si es propos\u00e9s demostrar de tant en tant que amb una mat\u00e8ria inadequada, amb un heroi insignificant, \u00e9s capa\u00e7 d&#8217;obtenir l&#8217;efecte m\u00e9s alt i, d&#8217;un \u00e0nima feble i mal disposada, una gran trag\u00e8dia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">\u00a0Doncs b\u00e9, una <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">d\u2019aquestes trag\u00e8dies d\u2019un heroisme no volgut \u00e9s la de Maria Antonieta.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">En termes sociol\u00f2gics dir\u00edem que Maria Antonieta va assumir el rol de reina sense adonar-se del deure associat a l\u2019exercici d\u2019aquest rol i sense les aptituds personals adients pel seu desenvolupament. I aix\u00ed, en comptes de governar veritablement, de rec\u00f3rrer el seu pa\u00eds interessant-se per les condicions materials de vida dels seus s\u00fabdits, port\u00e0 una vida fr\u00edvola i de balafiament, on la preocupaci\u00f3 per la seva indument\u00e0ria i pentinats \u2014referents per tota l\u2019\u00e8poca del rococ\u00f3\u2014 cops\u00e0 el seu inter\u00e8s per davant de les responsabilitats pr\u00f2pies del seu c\u00e0rrec.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Dures ressonen les paraules amb qu\u00e8 Zweig descriu el tarann\u00e0 de la reina: \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Maria Antonieta xerra exclusivament amb la boca i no amb el cervell. Quan se li parla, escolta distreta i a estones; en la conversa, on captiva amb la seva encantadora amabilitat i la seva volubilitat centellejant, deixa que es perdi tota idea amb prou feines expressada; no diu res, no pensa res, no llegeix res fins al final, no aferra fermament cap cosa per extreure\u2019n un sentit o una aut\u00e8ntica experi\u00e8ncia. Per aix\u00f2 no li agrada cap llibre, cap assumpte d&#8217;Estat, res seri\u00f3s que exigeixi paci\u00e8ncia i atenci\u00f3, i nom\u00e9s de mala gana, amb una lletra improvisada i il\u00b7legible, despatxa les cartes m\u00e9s indispensables. No complicar-se la vida; res que pugui produir tristesa, malenconia o avorriment<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">.\u00bb<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Aquesta \u00e9s la seva culpa: haver exercit la tasca m\u00e9s dif\u00edcil en la Hist\u00f2ria amb una frivolitat incomparable; tot i aix\u00ed, admesa la innegable culpa, Zweig no dubta de qualificar-la de venial, donada la immaduresa del seu car\u00e0cter en el moment d\u2019accedir al tro de Fran\u00e7a, quan encara no estava formada espiritualment, i la magnitud de la temptaci\u00f3 que l\u2019entorn adulador de Versalles exerc\u00ed tot idolatrant la seva figura \u2014com no convertir-se en lleugera on tot \u00e9s lleuger?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Ara b\u00e9. A mesura que el lector s\u2019endinsa en l\u2019obra aviat se n\u2019adona que el to de la primera part, clarament cr\u00edtic respecte del paper de Maria Antonieta com a reina de Fran\u00e7a, d\u00f3na pas, quan s\u2019inicien els esdeveniments revolucionaris, a un de ben diferent: el de la compassi\u00f3 per la reina que ho perd tot i que, enmig de la desgr\u00e0cia, tracta d\u2019aferrissar-se amb orgull als seus or\u00edgens per r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">esistir les humiliacions constants de qu\u00e8 va ser objecte amb coratge, en un intent de mostrar-se filla digna de l\u2019emperadriu Maria Teresa.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Finalitzem amb el judici equilibrat de S. Zweig sobre la figura de la reina que, com tot judici equ\u00e0nime, resulta versemblant : \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">A<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">qu\u00ed, com a la majoria dels casos, la veritat psicol\u00f2gica ve a trobar-se entre els dos extrems. Maria Antonieta no era ni la gran santa del monarquisme, ni la perduda, la <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">grue<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">, de la Revoluci\u00f3, sin\u00f3 un car\u00e0cter de tipus mitj\u00e0: una dona en realitat vulgar; ni massa intel\u00b7ligent ni massa n\u00e8cia; sense especial tend\u00e8ncia cap al b\u00e9 i sense la menor inclinaci\u00f3 cap al mal<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">\u00bb<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Un darrer apunt. Brollen en el text frases inspirades per una gran lucidesa que parlen del profund coneixement de la condici\u00f3 humana a qu\u00e8 havia arribat S. Zweig. \u00c9s dif\u00edcil desfer-se del pressentiment que la biografia de Maria Antonieta, com altres que va escriure, \u00e9s ocasi\u00f3 per transcendir la singularitat del personatge tot prestant la veu a una saviesa que va m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 del coneixement d\u2019una simple vida, com quan escriu despr\u00e9s de l\u2019execuci\u00f3 de Maria Antonieta: \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><i><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">Nom\u00e9s la deessa de la Llibertat amb els seus somiadors ulls de pedra, ha rom\u00e0s imm\u00f2bil en el seu lloc, i contempla sense pestanyejar una meta invisible. No ha vist ni o\u00eft gens. Severament, afigura una eterna llunyania m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 de les salvatges i boges accions dels homes. No sap ni vol saber qu\u00e8 coses es fan en el seu nom. <\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.35cm;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span lang=\"ca-ES\"><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">[A.
