Let’s talk about Art!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Great Wave off Kanagawa<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 also known as\u00a0The Great Wave<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or simply\u00a0The Wave<\/em><\/strong>, is a\u00a0woodblock print\u00a0by the Japanese\u00a0ukiyo-e\u00a0artist\u00a0Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833\u00a0in the late\u00a0Edo period\u00a0as the first print in Hokusai’s series\u00a0Thirty<\/em>–<\/em><\/a>six<\/em> Views<\/em> of <\/em>Mount<\/em> Fuji<\/em>. It is Hokusai’s most famous work, and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.<\/p>\n

The image depicts an enormous\u00a0wave\u00a0threatening boats off the coast of the\u00a0prefecture\u00a0of\u00a0Kanagawa. While sometimes assumed to be a\u00a0tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a large\u00a0rogue wave.\u00a0As in all the prints in the series, it depicts the area around\u00a0Mount Fuji\u00a0under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.<\/p>\n
