As part of our project “We make our board games” we are reflecting a lot about a text that is very present in our lives: instructive <\/strong>texts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the board games<\/strong> that we played had one characteristic in common<\/strong>: they all had a set of instructions<\/strong>. It is true that not everybody reads the instructions<\/em> and this is a real problem. Not reading the instructions<\/strong> can make the game boring<\/strong> or even impossible to play! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that we realized about the importance of instructions<\/strong>, it was time to read different sets<\/strong> and focus on their characteristics. We read a set of instructions in the different languages present in the school and we realized that they all had the same characteristics<\/strong>: they were short, direct, simple<\/strong> <\/mark>and sequenced<\/mark><\/strong>. It was very interesting to do the activity in different languages<\/strong> because it also offered the opportunity to observe the similarites and differences between languages<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was easy to understand<\/strong> the general idea of all the texts because of some key words very similar to Catalan and Spanish<\/strong>. And we could guess the meaning<\/strong> of difficult words in English<\/strong> just by using this strategy<\/strong>! Of course this was not possible with Arabic<\/strong>, which we learnt is a language that has a different origin and a different alphabet!<\/strong> Can you understand the texts? Can you match them with the set of English instructions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all this ideas, we were ready to create our instructions<\/strong>. We started with a simple exercise<\/strong>: a geometrical dictation<\/mark>. We created pictures using different shapes<\/strong> and we had to write or tell the texts<\/strong> so that our classmates could replicate<\/strong> them. Simple? Not really! We discovered that we had to be very precise in doing the instructions<\/strong> and specify very clearly <\/strong>not only the position<\/strong>, but also the size<\/strong> and the colour<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>

While reflecting about all we have learned about instructions, one Matilda suddenly realized that clear instructions are the basis of COMPUTERS<\/strong>… We will have to test instructions on some of the robots<\/strong> we have at school!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
