A pair of turns, one at bat and one in the field, by each team constitutes an\u00a0<a title=\"Inning (baseball)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inning_%28baseball%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">inning<\/a>.<br \/>\nA game consists of nine innings.<br \/>\nOne team\u2014customarily the visiting team\u2014bats in the top, or first half, of every inning. The other team\u2014customarily the home team\u2014bats in the bottom, or second half, of every inning.<br \/>\nThe goal of the game is to score more points (<a title=\"Run (baseball)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Run_%28baseball%29\" rel=\"nofollow\">runs<\/a>) than the other team.<br \/>\n&#8211; The players on the team at bat attempt to score runs by circling or completing a tour of the four bases set at the corners of the square-shaped\u00a0<a title=\"Baseball field\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_field\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">baseball diamond<\/a>. A player bats at\u00a0<a title=\"Home plate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Home_plate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">home plate<\/a>\u00a0and must proceed\u00a0<a title=\"Counterclockwise\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Counterclockwise\" rel=\"nofollow\">counterclockwise<\/a>\u00a0to first base, second base, third base, and back home in order to score a run.<br \/>\n&#8211; The team in the field attempts both to prevent runs from scoring and to record\u00a0<a title=\"Out (baseball)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Out_%28baseball%29\" rel=\"nofollow\">outs<\/a>, which remove opposing players from offensive action until their turn in their team&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Batting order (baseball)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_order_%28baseball%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">batting order<\/a>\u00a0comes up again. When three outs are recorded, the teams switch roles for the next half-inning.
