Environment Day<\/b>\u00a0(WED<\/b>) is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the\u00a0United Nations<\/a>‘ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the\u00a0protection of the environment<\/a>. First held in 1974, it has been a platform for\u00a0raising awareness<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0environmental issue<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0marine pollution<\/a>, human\u00a0overpopulation<\/a>,\u00a0global warming<\/a>,\u00a0sustainable consumption<\/a>\u00a0and wildlife crime. World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, the program has provided a theme and forum for businesses,\u00a0non government organizations<\/a>, communities, governments and celebrities to advocate environmental causes.<\/p>\n

The pandemic that the world has been dealing with<\/strong> for almost 1.5 years now has shown how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens \u2013 including coronaviruses \u2013 to spread. The fact remains that only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people\u2019s livelihoods, counteract\u00a0climate change\u00a0<\/a>and stop the collapse of biodiversity.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The theme for\u00a0World\u00a0<\/a>Environment\u00a0<\/a>Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’<\/strong> and Pakistan will be the global host for the day. This World Environment Day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.<\/p>\n

For too long, humans have been exploiting and destroying the planet\u2019s ecosystems. Every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch and over the last century, we have destroyed half of the wetlands. As much as 50 per cent of the world’s coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 per cent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celcius. Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks, like forests and wetlands, at a time when humanity can least afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have grown for three consecutive years and the planet is one place for potentially catastrophic\u00a0climate change.<\/a>\u00a0We must now fundamentally rethink our relationship with the living world, with natural ecosystems and their biodiversity and work towards its restoration.<\/p>\n
