One of the big problems teachers have to cope with when teaching English in Primary 1 and 2 is not only reading but writing. The main reasons are on the one hand, because they are still learning how to write in their mother tongue and on the other hand, because English spelling is completely different from its pronunciation bearing in mind our kids’ first languages.
Therefore, this school year in Primary 1 and 2 we are trying to learn how to write and read by doing; that is, by touching, feeling the letters to create words.
One of the activities for doing so has been carried out using in class magnetic letters and boards to unscramble the letters to create the words. We have been practising this with the days of the week, the months of the year and some classroom actions.
Obviously, by doing, children need more time to learn and thus more classes to put it into practice. However, both their language acquisition and their ability when writing in English dramatically improve or rocket.
I hope parents notice this as soon as possible.
